This summer, Thrive partnered with the inaugural Sewanee Summer DataLab program to better understand systems that support broadband access and equity in the tri-state region.
The research collaboration resulted in a map that identifies broadband assets across the region, layered against internet availability and usership data from the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) and Microsoft, respectively.
With limited time available, the research team of three students focused primarily on locating communities broadband assets such as libraries, which have the potential to be critical hubs for internet and device access, as well as digital learning opportunities. The research will continue to evolve including other assets such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and even physical infrastructure such as community-owned land and utility poles. This information in a singular asset inventory will help community members and leaders understand where access opportunities and gaps occur, in order to make informed decisions.
As it continues to evolve, the map will be a valuable tool in building a regional ecosystem of information and partners to close the digital divide across the tri-state greater Chattanooga region.
