Restoring the Legacy of Athens' Cook Park

Named after the son of two slaves who dedicated his career to education, J.L. Cook School was a prominent Black institution in the Southeast until it was closed in the 1960s during desegregation. Now, only an empty city park bears the name. With the Cook Park as a backdrop, residents of Athens are building an inclusive future for their community inspired by a legacy of Black history and progress.

Earlier this month, the Creative Arts Guild of Dalton, Georgia, challenged residents to capture this moment in time using #DayinDalton on Instagram. The photos poured in - family members, pets, front porches, home offices - familiar settings during these uncertain and unprecedented times. The result? Various snapshots, all contributing to a portrait of community: volunteerism, work ethic, staying connected while socially distant.
